Best of the Best: Boxing News named top boxing publication by BWAA

Boxing News Wins Big at Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Annual Writing Awards

BOXING NEWS was featured prominently in the Boxing Writers Association of America’s annual writing awards, The Bernies, with the brand named as the top publication/website for 2021. Several writers and contributors also won key individual awards.

In addition to two honorable mentions, NOT own Elliot Worsell won first place in Boxing Investigative Reporting for his article on boxers who served time in prison, Inside the fighterswhich was in the edition of April 6, 2021. John Dennen was named among the honorable mentions in the same category and in Event Coverage, while earning third place in Boxing News Story for his article, The Olympic nightmarepublished on December 28.

Supreme Contributor Springs Toledo won two categories for his writing in boxing news. His tribute to Tony DeMarco, An empty chair on Hanover Streetwas named best boxing feature film (under 1,500 words) while its article on Marvin Hagler, The difficult roadwas named best boxing article (over 1,500 words). jack hirsch, NOT main correspondent in the United States, also scored well in both feature categories. His story about Paul Simonetti, I was part of the storywon third place while his thoughts on his participation in the first Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali contest, Walk on the moon, won a second place. Hirsch’s two articles appeared in the March 4 edition.

NOT editor, matt christiearned second place in event coverage with Lesson, his report at ringside from Oleksandr Usyk-Anthony Joshua while also securing third place for his leader on the Vitor Belfort-Evander Holyfield debacle in the Boxing Column category. Other writers recognized for their work in NOT were Paul Wheeler and Sean Namwho were named among the honorable mentions.

Other writers who figured prominently included Hall of Famer Bernard Fernandez (for his article on Don King in the ring), Sports Illustrated Greg Bishop and BWAA President Joseph Santoliquito.

In total, boxing news earned eight top-three finishes alongside six honorable mentions. Everything to NOT are exceptionally grateful to the BWAA judges for taking the time to read our entries and consider them so highly.
