Clarivate Launches New Global Research Report on Managing Academic Publishing Credits in a Collaborative World

The Institute for Scientific Information proposes a new collaborative CNCI indicator

LONDON, January 26, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Clarivate Plc (NYSE: CLVT), a global leader in providing insights and trusted insights to accelerate the pace of innovation, today released a new report from the company’s Institute for Scientific Information™, which offers a new method of analyzing the credit that authors of academic papers receive via citations.

Across the research landscape, gaining credit through citing sources influences motivation and reputation. Credit for the publication of academic research often affects employment, promotion, and funding at the individual level, as well as funding and decision-making for academic research institutions and nations.

In an increasingly global and collaborative world, where the number of articles naming tens or even hundreds of researchers as authors is increase quickly, the need for informed, data-driven credit analysis that works across research disciplines and geographies is critical. However, existing methods of credit analysis can be distorted by an exceptionally high number of authors.

Making it Matter: Seeking Credit Management in a Collaborative World proposes a new indicator, the “CNCI Collaborative” (Collab-CNCI) as a possible solution.

jonathan adamsChief Scientist of the Institute for Scientific Information said: “This new indicator is a key innovation for the 21st century, as international collaboration becomes a dominant feature of global research. By studying existing and innovative analytical methods, we aim to help the global research community provide more and better research, and we believe that improving the credit system with an indicator such as Collab-CNCI would help recognize with precision achievement and research excellence – to accelerate the pace of innovation. »

The report not only confirms that highly collaborative documents can skew summary results at the national and institutional level – but also shows how this happens. It highlights key aspects of success and shows where institutions generate significant academic credit from citations of their more national papers.

Collab-CNCI supplements the already existing category-normalized citation impact indicator created by CWTS at Leiden University. But the number of citations accumulated for each article is normalized against other articles of the same year of publication, the same subject category, the same type of document and, above all, the same type of collaboration.

Ludo Waltman, Professor of Quantitative Science Studies at Leiden University’s Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS), said: “The increasing level of collaboration in global science raises difficult questions regarding the design and interpretation of bibliometric indicators. the complex interplay between scholarly collaboration and citation impact is absolutely essential. I welcome the contribution of the Institute for Scientific Information, which is part of Clarivate, to solve this difficult problem.

The Institute for Scientific Information invites research users and managers to comment on the relative advantages of the Collab-CNCI in comparison and as a complement to other methods in enabling balanced and timely decisions at the individual, institutional and national levels.
