Cricket Scotland apologizes to victims of racial abuse ahead of review

Cricket Scotland said it was “truly sorry” for anyone who has experienced racist abuse while playing the sport, ahead of an independent investigation on Monday.

A review has come after Scotland’s all-time greatest wicket-taker Majid Haq told Sky Sports News that Cricket Scotland was ‘institutionally racist’, while former team-mate Qasim Sheikh said he had also suffered racist abuse.

The results are due out on Monday, with Aamer Anwar, the lawyer representing the two players, telling Sky the report could prove “devastating” for Cricket Scotland.

The governing body has yet to see the report and was unwilling to speculate on the content – but has issued an apology to anyone who has suffered from racism in sport.

“Cricket should be a welcoming place for everyone and not a place where racism or any form of discrimination takes place. The Cricket Scotland Board is truly sorry for anyone who has experienced racism in cricket in Scotland,” a Cricket Scotland spokesperson said.

“We would like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to the review, but the Council is unable to comment on the independent review report as we will not see it until it is publicly released on Monday.”
