Dr. Leonard Barry Smith Selected for Publication of IAOTP’s Top 50 Intrepid Leaders

Dr. Leonard Barry Smith, DDS, MSc, FRCD(C), FAAPD(life), ABPD(life) Diplomat, Pediatric Dentist and former owner of his private practice, Dental Care for Children, located in Calgary, Alberta Canada, has recently been chosen to be listed in the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) publication Top 50 Fearless Leaders.
While being selected for publication in the IAOTP’s Top 50 Fearless Leaders publication is an honor in itself, only 50 of the world’s brightest, courageous, and inspiring professionals are selected for this accolade.

Dr. Smith is an exemplary genius in his field and has devoted more than fifty years of his career to pediatric dentistry. He was honored in 2019 as Best Pediatric Dentist of the Year and he will receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from 2020. Along with these merits, Dr. Smith will be awarded as Best Pediatric Dentist of the decade while attending the 2022 IAOTP Annual Meeting. With such phenomenal impact during his professional career as a pediatric dentist, Dr. Smith has proven his genius and exceptional skills. His impressive past work experience includes: President of the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, Chief of the Dental Department at Alberta Children’s Hospital, and Consultant to their Hemophilia and Cleft Palate teams. Dr. Smith is also an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary and an Associate Member of the Maternal and Child Health Research Institute at Alberta Children’s Hospital. He served as Chair of the Non-Hospital Dental Facility Accreditation Committee of the Alberta Dental Association and College.
Dr. Smith received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Alberta in 1968 and earned a Master of Science and Certification in Pedodontic Dentistry from The Ohio State University in 1972. In 1970 he completed a residency at Winnipeg Children’s Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, Life Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Life Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Smith is the founder of two non-profit organizations, the Society for A Healthy Mouth Healthy Child (Alberta) and the Foundation for a Healthy Mouth Healthy Child in the United States. While Dr. Smith observed a significant increase in the incidence of early childhood caries (ECC) locally, he undertook further research and discovered that this problem was prevalent throughout North America. ECC, which can start as young as 9 months old, is an infectious disease and if left untreated or delayed treatment can cause serious health problems that may affect the child for life. of his life. Dr. Smith recognized the need to provide the public with compelling evidence that ECC was a disease that was not limited to baby teeth. As a result, Dr. Smith has organized awareness campaigns to explain why it is so essential to have preventive dental care from a baby’s first feeding in order to stop the onset of ECC.
Dr. Smith is widely known as the first formally trained pediatric dentist in Calgary and his practice was an established pediatric dentistry clinic in Calgary. Dental Care Children provides young Calgary patients with a warm, friendly, family-friendly dental experience. Dr. Smith’s passion, caring and educating his patients about oral care set him apart from other dentists. He has provided generations of patients and cared for healthy children, children with special needs, and patients ranging from newborns and up.
Recognized worldwide throughout his career, Dr. Smith has received numerous awards and honours. Last year, Dr. Smith was featured on the famous Reuters Building in Times Square, New York, for his selection as the best pediatric dentist of the decade. In 2019, he graced the cover of TIP (Top Industry Professionals) magazine and was named Best Pediatric Dentist of the Year. In 2017 he was selected as Pinnacle Professional of the Year by Continental Who’s Who and recognized by the International Association for HealthCare Professionals and Leading Physicians of the World. For 2014, he received a Special Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics for his distinguished service and dedication to the mission and goals of the Academy. For 2013, selected as Outstanding Professional of the Year by Worldwide Who’s Who. He was interviewed by CUTV News and is being considered for an exclusive interview to air on TIP Radio.
Looking back, Dr. Smith attributes his success to his wife and children, his education, the mentors he had the honor of working with, and his passion for research. When not working, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his family. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue educating people through an age-specific oral health program. He hopes that one day it will become the standard program globally, written in all major languages and made available using broadband technology, to reach those in remote places. He believes that if we don’t teach today’s children and tomorrow’s parents why and how their oral health affects their overall health and development, early childhood cavities will never be controlled or eliminated. .
