Jacqueline DeBrew, faculty member of the Department of Nursing at Elon, and Karen Lindsey, faculty member of the Department of Strategic Communications, were told that their article, “Innovations in Learning: The Professional Nursing Project “, has been accepted for publication in Nursing Educational Perspectives, the research journal of the National League of Nursing.
The publication of the article is the culmination of a collaboration that began when DeBrew and Lindsey met at a group activity in the orientation of new teachers organized by CATL in the fall of 2021.

When faced with creating a new foundations of nursing course for new students in the accelerated BSN program, DeBrew struggled with an innovative way to tie it all together and demonstrate the role of the nurse. professional. While attending the new faculty orientation, Lindsey shared with DeBrew details of a mission she uses in public relations and strategic writing classes to get students following the public image of an organization on social media platforms and assess brand positioning on websites. DeBrew adapted the assignment to create a professional nursing project for nursing students to assess healthcare organizations.
The collaboration on the assignment and subsequently on the manuscript led Debrew and Lindsey to ask themselves, “why don’t we do this more often?”
They quickly recognized that reaching out to fellow experts in their respective fields has proven invaluable in creating this project and publication. Both colleagues say plans are underway to work together on future assignments and hopefully bring their students together for an interdisciplinary learning activity.
