Meghan Markle gets formal apology from UK publication

The High Court in London has asked The Associated Press – publishers of the Mail Online and Mail On Sunday – to print a first-page copyright infringement apology after it published parts of a five-page letter to his father after his marriage to Prince Harry in 2008.

Sunday’s front page notice reflected this, saying: “The Duchess of Sussex wins copyright infringement case against Associated Newspapers for articles published in The Mail On Sunday and published on Mail Online ”,

On page 3, the statement continued: “Following a hearing on January 19 and 20, 2021 and another hearing on May 5, 2021, the Court rendered judgment in favor of the Duchess of Sussex on her complaint for copyright infringement. The court found Associated Newspapers infringed its copyright by posting extracts from his handwritten letter to his father in The Mail on Sunday and Mail Online. Financial remedies have been agreed ”,

The High Court ruled that The Mail On Sunday should print a more detailed ad under the heading ‘The Duchess of Sussex’ which correctly describes the legal obligations under the ruling.

For a week, Mail Online will also have to print the apology on its home page with a hyperlink to the full judgment and subsequent court-ordered actions.

Markle will also be compensated for nearly 90% of his legal fees for fighting the publisher in court. To the tune of approximately $ 1.7 million.

Key quote

“It is a victory not only for me, but for anyone who has ever been afraid to stand up for what is right.” Markle said after the Dec. 2 decision in his favor.

“While this victory sets a precedent, what matters most is that we are now collectively brave enough to reshape a tabloid industry that conditions people to be cruel and profits from the lies and the pain they create. . “
