Chinese conglomerate Tencent has fired the entire editorial staff of Fanbyte, an online gaming publication it owns.
Some Fanbyte staff members posted their ordeal on Twitter, claiming that the editor, media manager, managing editor, social editor, managing editor, graphic designer, podcast producer and authors of the website had been sacked.
“Fanbyte employees were fired slowly, one by one, over several hours,” reports Tech Crunch.
Fanbyte’s Instagram biography with a display name “forgot the keys?” read: “Tentent made $35 billion in net revenue last year and laid off nearly every member of child company Fanbyte! Please support staff elsewhere.”
Fanbyte employee Merritt K tweeted on Friday: “I see a lot of empathy for everyone who was laid off today, but also spare some thought for the people who had to fire everyone one by one at over countless hours, drawing the delicious psychological torture.”
Tencent has not officially commented on the development.
Last month, Tencent laid off 5,500 employees, after posting $19.8 billion in revenue in the June quarter, down 3%, which was the first drop since its IPO. .
Tencent has reduced its workforce for the first time since 2014.
The company attributed the weak performance to “fewer big game releases, lower user spending, and the implementation of minor protective measures.”
