Tharoor writes to Mistry, calls for the release of voter lists for Cong Prez polls
New Delhi: Senior Congress official Shashi Tharoor has written to the chairman of the party’s Central Electoral Authority, Madhusudan Mistry, requesting the release of voter lists for the upcoming election for the post of AICC chairman, officials said. sources on Friday. Their letters come as the voices calling for the publication of the electoral list grow louder and the debate within the party intensifies. Tharoor, who plans to throw his hat in the ring, wrote to Mystery and demanded the release of voter rolls, sources said.
The nomination process includes 10 nominators who are delegates from the State Congressional Committee (PCC). According to the sources, the senior leader said it was important to know about these delegates as articles can be rejected if their names are not in the final list. On Wednesday, Manish Tewari and Karti Chidambaram as well as Tharoor also demanded that voter lists be made public to ensure transparency.
Tewari, who is among the G-23 leaders with Tharoor seeking wide-ranging party reforms, has raised objections to the party not releasing voter names for party chairman polls and has stated that it was to be published on the All India Website of the Congressional Committee for a “Free and Fair” Process. Tharoor, who expressed his intention to contest the party’s presidential election, agreed with Tewari and said everyone should know who can nominate and who can vote.
“Certainly, I think it is important for everyone to have transparency on the electoral lists. If that’s what Manish asked for, then I’m sure that’s a principle everyone would agree with. Everyone should know who can nominate and who can vote. “There is nothing wrong with that,” Tharoor had said at a reception in Thiruvananthapuram.
Another MP Karti Chidambaram had supported the view, saying that every election requires a well-defined electoral college. Mistry, however, maintained that the election is conducted transparently and that the entire voting process is free and fair.
He said earlier this week that according to the party’s constitution, the voters list cannot be made public, but it can be provided to anyone contesting the election. Congressman Manickam Tagore hit back at leaders demanding the publication of voter lists, saying they should not create confusion and should be proud of the “open system”.
The notification of the election of the President of the Congress will be published on September 22 and the nomination process will be held from September 24 to 30. The deadline for the withdrawal of nominations is October 8 and the election, if necessary, will take place on October. 17. The result will be published on October 19.
